Activity Centres: Facilitating Growth and Empowering Children

1_You are doing a great job by contributing to supplementary education

How many times have the children approached you complaining of boring classroom lessons?

How many times have you seen a child, previously ridiculed for not being ‘good enough,’ blossom into his/her actual potential after joining your centre? What is it that makes supplementary education essential to a child’s learning? What are you doing right by running an activity centre?

Children often lack the motivation or interest for regular schooling but show unbridled passion when it comes to activity centres. These centres act as providers of supplementary education, which refers to any opportunity that facilitates growth of self in children, outside of classrooms and schools, in a formal or an informal learning environment. The centres stroke the curiosity and passion that children naturally have, and empower them to believe in themselves. A study conducted on understanding the factors powering academic giftedness found that the chances of being called ‘gifted’ increased 50 percent if the child is involved in extra-curricular activities. The activity centres across India, that target children and young adults, offer a rich learning experience at their best. What do these centres offer the youngsters?

  • Openings to explore their talents
  • Engage with peer groups and develop support networks
  • Discover role models who are from similar backgrounds or enjoy similar activities
  • Provide a platform where they can thrive with personalized learnings and deep teacher-student engagement.

In fact, Surveys have consistently observed that activity centres help students perform better in schools, increase parental engagement (thus benefitting students), and have a strong positive impact on the motivation to learn in children  (Maylor 2015). By going beyond the prescribed curriculums of schools and other educational institutions, the centres develop the additional skills considered critical for long-term academic as well as economic success. These characteristics include grit, diligence, social skills, persistence, optimism, motivation, and self-control  (Cassen et al. 2015).

The experiences and skills the activity centres provide can go a long way in realizing the mounting interest displayed in educating children in reputed universities abroad. Elizabeth Kipp Lauffer, a renowned Foreign Education Counsellor, states that a prospective aspirant’s application should be more than just perfect test scores; the student should also have the mental growth that comes from having an active interest in extra-curricular activities and volunteering for social service. This ensures that the student body is enriched by the diversity the applicant brings to the table. In numerous ways the activity centres provide a platform that facilitates this growth.

Activity centres and inquisitiveness

Accordingly, activity centres play a key role in filling the significant gaps left by conventional education. They make the experience of learning new things fun and provide a ground where natural inquisitiveness in children is nourished and nurtured. This reinforces and encourages a positive outlook in children towards education and life in general; by building their self-esteem and confidence, the centres also bolster the academic performance in classrooms. It is thus no wonder these vibrant institutions become places where sentiments like “Can’t wait to be back for the next session!” “Cool! That was something new!” “I feel at home,” dominate the minds of young people. Such is the effect activity centres have on our children and youngsters.
